On 17 February 2011 the Herald Scotland reported a Distance Calculator scandal in regard of officials in none other than a transport authority in Scotland, Strathclyde Connection for Transport (SPT).

Seemingly two officials, David McLachlan and a Mr. Alistair Watson, claimed £17,544 and £10,756 for the 2006-09 period whereas an additional person David Fagan in a similar placement claimed just £1,355 within the same period.

Of course the Scotland Herald makes this out like a major scandal. Even so, it can be that Mr McLachlan and Mr. Watson were pursuing the guidelines and properly claimed their charges wheras Mr. Fagan wasn't as diligent and didn't bother.

While these claims do not appear extreme for mature business men on the three year phase there appears to be outrage amongst some commentators which stems mainly in the proven fact that the officials were necessary to promote the use of public transport.

An SPT spokesman said the men had, on average, three or four conferences a week on SPT business at its headquarters in central Glasgow

www.mapmiles.com Distance Calculator the distance in between Mr. McLachlan's home town of Hamilton and the SPT head office on 12 Georges St, Glasgow as 8.707 miles. A round journey is 17.415 miles. The mileage expense allowance upon the foundation of below 10,000 miles travelled in the year should amount to £6.97 assuming no passengers. Perhaps there's a some misconception because within the UK no mileage expense statements are allowed between a persons home and their work environment.

Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs website verifies which "Taxpayers cannot claim the money for private trips, such as travel at home to operate, and journeys which serve both a business and a private objective."

Additionally, the Distance Calculator does not include costs that are specific to some particular journey such as tolls, congestion costs and parking costs. These is going to be allowable as a reduction where they are sustained solely for business purposes. These types of costs could also have been stated by the officials but certainly there'd be no feasible earnings component.

The article in Scotland Herald doesn't appear to take the HMR&C look at that the mileage minute rates are merely compensation for that devaluation and costs suffered by the officials.
